~~~ The 12 Days of Christmas ~~~
What do leaping lords, French hens, swimming
swans, and a partridge that wont come out of the pear tree
have to do with Christmas?
Roman Catholics in England were not
permitted to practice their faith openly from 1558 to 1829.
During that time, this carol was a catechism song for young
Catholics. Each verse is a code which the children could
easily remember; and each verse has two meanings: a surface
meaning and a hidden meaning.
·
The partridge in the pear tree = Jesus Christ
·
Two turtle doves = the Old and New Testaments
·
Three French hens = faith, hope, and love
·
Four calling birds = the four Gospels
·
Five golden rings = the first five books of the Old Testament (the
Torah or Law)
·
Six geese a-laying = the six days of creation
·
Seven swans a-swimming = the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit (prophecy,
serving, teaching, exhortation, contribution, leadership, mercy)
·
Eight maids a-milking = the eight beatitudes
·
Nine ladies dancing = the nine fruits of the Holy Spirit (love,
joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,
gentleness, self-control)
·
Ten lords a-leaping = the Ten Commandments
·
Eleven pipers piping = the eleven faithful disciples
·
Twelve drummers drumming = the twelve statements of belief in the
Apostles Creed
